Adam Kuhn & The Movies: No Country For Old Men
Plot: The film opens with a shot of desolate, wide-open country in West Texas in June 1980. Llewelyn Moss, a retired machinist, is hunting wild game and stumbles across a drug deal gone wrong. Bodies from the gunned-down drug cartel are strewn amongst the motionless 4×4s. Llewelyn Moss analyzes the situation after finding a cartel member suffering his last moments on Earth and decides to increase his retirement egg substantially when he finds the unclaimed 2.5 million dollars in cash still clutched in the hands of fleeing-but-dead cartel member.
Leaving the copious amounts of drugs behind, Llewelyn returns home to his wife claiming that they have no more worries. However, Llewelyn feels remorse when thinking about the dying cartel member and decides to return to the blood-bathed scene with water for the doomed man. Llewelyn quickly discovers he is not alone at the scene and is being hunted down by the cartel kingpins and a mysterious contract killer.
The contract killer takes matters into his own hands as he rids the kingpins of their lives and starts chase of the fleeing Llewelyn. Meanwhile, the aging sheriff discovers the crime scene and realizes the danger Llewelyn is in, having dealt with the disturbed hit-man before. Reflecting on his past life as a law-man, Sheriff Bell collects clues at the various crime scenes that give him insight into the killer’s inner workings and that may help him save Llewelyn’s life from the ruthless hitman.
The chase twists and turns through the south as the hitman and Llewelyn change places as the hunter and the hunted. Will Sheriff Bell be able to protect Llewelyn and his wife from the hired guns of the drug cartel? Can Llewelyn outwit the calculating hitman? The events will change with the flip of a quarter in this stunning action-drama.
My Verdict:
Brilliant, simply stunning. The imagery of the 1980’s south is desolate but true. The depth to which the characters are revealed in the film is expansive and unique. This flick isn’t subject to your typical story template, it will elude all of your expectations and keep you immersed in the plot throughout the film and beyond. The hit-man is methodical and calculating so much that you will raise no doubts with the procedures he commits to. Nothing will prepare for you where the story leads.
My Beefs: It’s hard, nearly impossible, to find fault with this film – evidenced by the astounding amount of awards it has conquered. If anything, I wanted to see more history of the mysterious hitman revealed. But that is nitpicking – let’s get down to the bottom line here; this film is good!
