Synopsis: Into the Wild tells the adventures of Christopher McCandless, a top student at Emory University and an athlete. After graduating, McCandless decides to give $24,000 of his savings account to OXFAM and later burn all the money in his wallet. He hitchhikes to Alaska to live in the wild. During his adventure, he encounters several unique people that change his life before he faces the dangers of wilderness.

My Take: An AFI Movie of the Year in 2007, this is a great film based on a non-fiction story. You may be familiar with Emile Hirsch from “The Girl Next Door”; don’t be fooled, he’s a great actor. You’ll be amazed with just how incredibly dedicated he is to the roll.

The imagery is beautiful; the natural beauty of some of the greatest places in the U.S. is shown in the movie, especially that of Alaska. Most of the movie is dedicated to McCandless’ travels through the U.S. and Mexico, so don’t be expecting to be bombarded with landscapes of Alaska for two hours, instead you’ll see a veritable cornucopia of landscapes and terrains from throughout America.

Not only is the acting and imagery great, but the message this film conveys has real merit and applies to all of us. It sounds corny, but there is a real life lesson to be learned here. For that simple reason, this film is a must see. I’ll end this section with my favorite quote from the movie:

“Happiness is only real when shared.”

My Beefs: This is a long movie. This is the type of movie that you must dedicate yourself to watching, it’s not something that you can pop on while doing other things. This really isn’t a bad trait of the film, but just be warned that this film demands 100% of your attention.
