Chris and I took the Rover out to check out a scenic overlook where I wanted to take some photos. Unfortunately, the overlook was closed, so we drove around the area for a bit and then came up with the plan that we wanted to take the Rover out onto a sandbar.
After a crossing a bridge from the south side of the Wisconsin river to what we later found is named “Long Island”, we spotted a trail that ventured into the forest. I selected low-range in the Rover’s transfer case and descended down the dirt trail into the forest, only to be thwarted by a large rock – definitely placed there to keep 4WDs out.
Were we going to let a big rock stop our fun? No, we blazed a new trail to the left and ventured deeper into the forest, threading our way between the trees and crossing deep ravines and uneven terrain with aplomb. That was until we discovered the mud:

Remember the lovable Claudio from Long Way Round and Long Way Down? Those treks haven’t been his only world explorations, in fact, Claudio has filmed and documented cultures located in a variety of remote locations, including the mountains of Afghanistan, the rain forests of New Guinea, and the front lines in Iraq. This latest film from him follows a group of philanthropists on an anti-slavery campaign to deliver 4×4 vehicles to humanitarian organizations in Sierra Leone. As always, I’ve hidden a nice little extra in this post – if you’re unsure how to access it, contact me:

It’s been forever since I posted on here. But, I guess I better start the year off right, so here’s a story about my snowboarding trip in January.
Let me preface this story with what happened the first time I went snowboarding. Long story short, I broke my nose the day after I had my wisdom teeth (all 4) removed. I also fractured my arm. Keep in mind, I had been doing well the entire day, it’s just at the end of the day I happened to hook my board on a nasty patch of ice and I went down face first. I snowboarded down the hill, leaving a ginormous trail of blood, cleaned myself up, and continued to snowboard as if nothing happened.
So, now that you know that, here’s the story of my second time snowboarding ever. I struggled for the first hour or so, I was pretty much relearning everything. I picked it up and really got the hang of it later in the day.
At the chair lift, we paired up to ascend the hill. I was just lucky enough to pair up with the really cute girl that Adrian had just rode up with. Great, I’ve got a wonderful knack for screwing this stuff up. We chatted as the chairlift climbed the hill, and towards the top, I mentioned that this is the part I hate, getting off. Little did I know, but Paul ahd just said, “I hope he falls and totally takes her out.”
Well, you guessed. A colossal wipeout. I saw the chair go right over my head as we both hit the ground, her screaming, and me cursing quietly to myself.
Worse, she kept going down the same hill as me after the incident!

After a 5 hour ride up to Paul’s place Friday night, I settle down with the gang to a nice camp fire and some cold beers to kick of the weekend in Presque Isle. The weedend was packed boat loads of fun. On Saturday, we spent the day on the water – we visited the beech and drank some brews.

I guess the local law enforcement got wind of our legal activities and decided to investigate further:

The water activities continue on Sunday at Big Lake. This lake was GORGEOUS! The sand was soft and weedless – you could wade out into the water about 100 feet and only be up to your waste in glorious and weedless sand.

Here’s all of us in front of the boat on Big Lake:

Later, we headed back to Paul’s house to enjoy some of Greg’s delicious chicken:

This weekend provided some of the best fun I’ve had all summer!
